8mm & Super 8 FILM TRANSFER FROM RJC VIDEO SERVICES
8mm Film
Regular-8 is also known as standard-8, double-8, cine-8, normal-8 or 8mm. This film size was introduced in 1932. Old cameras ran at 15 or 16 FPS (frames per second.) Cameras made after the mid-1950's were mostly designed to instead normally run at 18 FPS. (Fairchild once made magnetic sound cameras, which ran at 24 FPS. The magnetic striped sound film was discontinued many years ago.) Regular-8 film is 5/16" (8mm) wide.
Super-8 was introduced in 1965. Fuji also made Single-8 cameras, using a different camera cartridge, but using film that can be shown on the same projectors. The cameras normally run at 18 FPS. (From 1974 until 1996 it was possible to film with sound, but the magnetic striped sound film is no longer made.) Some serious users film at 24 FPS. Super-8 film is 5/16" (8mm) wide, with smaller perforations, and a 50% larger picture area than Regular-8.
For the average consumer, chain transfers (Real Time) are the most affordable method for preserving old 8mm and Super 8mm home-movie film onto a digital medium.
Film can be transferred anywhere from 6 to 24 fps and produce a crisp and flicker-free image. Chain transfers utilize an image transfer process through the help of Broadcast quality 3CCD cameras in conjunction with special telecine projectors. The film frame floats in mid air while the optics of the camera, slated for over 600 lines of resolution, focuses on the image.
The resulting image is sent directly via firewire to our computer workstation. This process allows us to edit out leaders, blank spots, add soundtracks, titles, and output to various video formats. If DVD is the desired output format, complete customization of chapter marks, navigation, and more is available.
All chain (Real Time) transfer services include:
• Splicing (if necessary)
• Transfer of film to digital
• Editing out of blank spots, beginning and end leaders, etc.
• Basic Opening and closing transition (DVD Only)
• Encoding to MPEG2 (DVD Only)
Super 8mm film with magnetic sound is transferred directly with the film.
RJC Video Services accepts 8mm, Super 8 silent, Super 8 sound for transfer on our chain transfer equipment.
Chain transfers are the perfect solutions for individuals looking to preserve their 8mm and Super 8mm film onto the highest quality consumer video format without breaking the bank.
For the discriminating and professional customer, we offer a high quality, low cost alternative to film scanning.
Each individual frame of film is individually captured as a still image and later assembled into an uncompressed video file. This enables us to output the transferred film to any frame rate without flicker or blended frames. Our transfers utilize an image transfer process through the help of Broadcast-Quality 3CCD cameras in conjunction with special film transport mechanisms.
Some of the other benefits are: • Steady frame registration • Perfect image focus • Flicker free images • No blended frames • Improved image clarity • Frame rate independance • Even light illumination
